Communication Definition:
Communication is the structured process of exchanging information, ideas, and thoughts
between individuals or groups through verbal, written, or nonverbal means. Effective
communication requires clarity, active listening, and the ability to adapt one’s message to the
audience and context. It plays a fundamental role in professional and academic settings,
enabling collaboration, problem-solving, and knowledge sharing. In a professional
environment, strong communication skills are essential for conveying complex ideas
accurately, influencing decisions, and building meaningful relationships. Without effective
communication, even the most innovative ideas can fail to reach their intended audience and
make a lasting impact.
REFLECTION PARAGRAPH ON 1st ASSIGNMENT:
Written Communication Competency Indicator 4: Prepares Effective Written and Oral
Communication Course: COMM 2311 Assignment 4: “Where Do We Live?”
Performance Level: Intermediate. In this written assignment, I composed a persuasive
essay comparing the habitability of Earth and Mars, ultimately arguing that Earth remains the
superior choice for human life. This task directly assessed the written communication
component of the Communication competency, particularly my ability to organize
information, develop a clear thesis, and support arguments with evidence based reasoning.
I explored scientific comparisons between the two planets including atmospheric conditions,
seasonal patterns, and terraforming possibilities requiring me to critically evaluate and
synthesize information from multiple sources to build a coherent and informative essay.
One of the main difficulties I encountered was structuring the argument in a way that was
both scientifically accurate and accessible to a general reader. Transitioning smoothly
between technical descriptions, such as the nuclear detonation method for melting Mars’ polar
ice caps and engaging narrative prose required multiple revisions. I overcame this by
focusing on paragraph level coherence and using transitional phrases to guide the reader
logically from one point to the next. I rate my performance at the intermediate level because
I demonstrated a solid command of essay structure and argumentation, but I still needed to
improve my use of formal citation and academic vocabulary. My advice to future students
tackling a similar assignment is to outline your essay before writing, clearly defining your
thesis and supporting points, as this significantly reduces structural errors and saves revision
time.
REFLECTION PARAGRAPH ON 2nd ASSIGNMENT:
Oral Communication Competency Indicator 5: Delivers Effective Oral Communication
& Indicator 1: Determines the Nature and Extent of Information NeedsCourse:
COMM 2311 Assignment: Mock Job Interview / Oral Presentation Performance Level:
Advance level. This oral assignment required me to speak for approximately one minute
and thirty seconds about myself and present an original idea in a simulated professional
interview setting. My professor acted as an interviewer from JAHA Hospital at Saudi
Aramco, where I was applying for a position as an AI Solutions Architect. During the
presentation, I introduced my concept of a robotic AI arm equipped with small inserted
cameras capable of detecting the length, depth, and width of a tooth cavity, then drilling and
applying a tooth filling with no human intervention required. I clarified that this AI dentist
technology would be applicable specifically to tooth decay cleaning and routine teeth
cleaning procedures, as more complex dental operations would still require a qualified human
dentist.
The greatest challenge I faced was managing nervousness and structuring a coherent,
convincing presentation within such a short time frame, especially since I was simultaneously
introducing myself and proposing a technical innovation. The time constraint pushed me to
be concise and deliberate with every sentence. I overcame this obstacle by rehearsing in front
of a camera taking a video of me and timing myself repeatedly until my delivery felt natural.
I assess my performance as advanced because I successfully communicated the core idea and
responded to follow up questions, and did this assignment with fluency and maintaining
steady eye contact throughout. For future students, I advise preparing a brief mental outline
of key points before speaking and practicing under realistic conditions, ideally in front of an
audience, so that the pressure of the actual delivery becomes more manageable.
